Page
Rank - Impact
& Relevance
A page
rank is a
measure of the 'quality' of a website and is one of the many
factors search engines use to determine
the ranking of a website for search terms .
A website
page rank
falls in the
range of 0 to 10.
Google's home page
has a page rank of
10.
When
a website
is posted
it will have no page rank.
It takes a while for
Google to allocate a page rank
and whilst
this does not help a new website, Websites
in
Search Engines have achieved top page rankings for its' new websites
despite this.
A website
with no links from other websites is likely to remain
with a page rank
of
zero or unranked, which does not help in generating search
engine traffic.
Search
engines produce webmaster guidelines.
Websites
falling foul of such guidelines, will be assigned a zero page
rank,
until they are rectified. Links to such
websites should be avoided, to avoid your website
being 'tarred with the same
brush'.
Page
rank is
determined by a number of factors.
Larger
websites with a high number of links from other websites to pages
contained within, will be allocated a higher page
rank than
smaller websites with less links -
this reflects the trusted nature of the source of material contained
within such websites.
A
small business website
could realistically expect to achieve a page
rank of
2 within six
months of posting and a maximum of 4 over time.
Page
rank can
be improved by website
owners, by generating reciprocal links - see 'Reciprocal Links'
.
